Profender spot-on drops against helminths
General Information
Profender is a combined anthelmintic drug. 1 ml of the product contains 21.43 mg of emodepside and 85.75 mg of praziquantel. Profender is available as spot-on drops in three dosages for kittens and cats up to 2.5 kg, for cats 2.5–5 kg, and for cats 5–8 kg. Manufactured by «Bayer» (Germany).
Indications
Profender is prescribed for the deworming of cats for both preventive and therapeutic purposes against nematodes (Toxocara cati, Toxascaris leonina, Ancylostoma tubaeforme) and cestodes (Echinococcus multilocularis, Dipylidium caninum, Taenia taeniaeformis).
Application
The product is applied externally, onto an area the cat cannot lick, directly onto the skin between the shoulder blades at the base of the neck. Apply the product to dry, undamaged skin. Profender can be used on kittens over 8 weeks of age and/or weighing more than 0.5 kg. The time required for the product to be absorbed is about 2 hours. After this time, the animal may be bathed if necessary.

Mechanism of Action
The mechanism of action of praziquantel involves depolarization of neuromuscular ganglion blockers and disruption of glucose transport and microtubular function in cestodes; praziquantel causes disruption of muscle innervation, paralysis, and death of the parasites. By exerting a stimulating effect on presynaptic latrophilin receptors, emodepside causes paralysis and death of the parasite.
Efficacy
Deworming of cats with Profender is carried out as a single treatment. The active ingredients in the product provide a broad spectrum of anthelmintic action against roundworms and tapeworms, and also act on different stages of the helminths' life cycle mature individuals, immature individuals, migrating L3 larval stages in the body, and L4 stages parasitizing the gastrointestinal tract.
Safety
Side effects and complications when using the product in accordance with this instruction are generally not observed. The shelf life of the product, provided storage conditions are met, is 3 years from the date of manufacture.
