Prodevit, 10 ml is an oral solution from the Ukrainian manufacturer Produkt. It's an oil-based drop with three fat-soluble vitamins: each ml contains vitamin A (10,000 IU), vitamin D3 (15,000 IU) and vitamin E (20 mg) in sunflower oil. It's used to prevent and treat vitamin deficiencies, osteodystrophy and rickets, for bone fractures and joint dysplasia, and in farm animals for postpartum hypocalcaemia and hypophosphataemia.
What it is and how it works
Vitamin A is needed for skin, mucous membranes, vision and growth. Vitamin D3 regulates calcium and phosphorus metabolism, helping absorb them from the gut and mineralise bone. Vitamin E is an antioxidant that protects cell membranes and matters for reproduction. All three are fat-soluble and build up in the body, so dosing is especially important.
Dosage for pets
Give it by mouth with food for 3–4 weeks. Doses are based on the vitamin D3 content.
| Animal | Preventive dose | Treatment dose |
|---|---|---|
| Adult dogs, per 20 kg | 1 drop a day | 4–5 drops a day |
| Puppies, per 10 kg | 1 drop a day | 3–4 drops a day |
| Cats | 1 drop every 3–4 days | 2 drops every 3–4 days |
| Small rodents | 1 drop every 3–4 days | 2 drops every 3–4 days |
| Pet birds | 1 drop every 3–4 days | 2 drops every 3–4 days |
Pros
- Three vitamins at once. A, D3 and E in one bottle.
- For many species. Dogs, puppies, cats, rodents and birds.
- Very economical. Doses are counted in drops, so a bottle lasts.
- Easy to give. Drops are mixed into food.
- Low price. One of the most affordable vitamin products.
Cons and what to keep in mind
- Overdose risk. Vitamins A and D accumulate, so extra drops are dangerous.
- Not with steroids. Don't combine with corticosteroids.
- Not for everyone. Pets on complete food usually don't need it.
- Precision needed. Drop it onto a piece of food rather than guessing into the bowl.
Why you mustn't exceed the dose
Excess water-soluble vitamins leave in the urine, but fat-soluble ones accumulate in the liver and tissues. Too much vitamin D3 raises blood calcium and can lead to calcium deposits in the kidneys, blood vessels and other organs, while too much vitamin A can harm bones and the liver. So Prodevit is given strictly by the table, as a 3–4 week course, and not combined with other supplements containing A and D without your vet's approval. This matters especially for puppies and kittens on commercial food, where vitamins are already balanced.
Who really needs it
Animals on home-made diets without supplements, pets weakened after illness, those with signs of deficiency (poor coat, bone problems in young animals), and during fracture recovery — on a vet's advice. Puppies and kittens on complete growth food usually don't need extra vitamins A and D. When vitamins are genuinely useful is covered in vitamins for dogs and cats: when they're needed, and puppy feeding in what to feed a puppy.
Birds and rodents
For pet birds and small rodents the dose is 1–2 drops every 3–4 days, not daily. Put the drop on a piece of food, a seed or a treat the animal will definitely eat. Don't add oil drops to the drinker, as the oil stays on the surface and walls and the dose becomes inaccurate. Birds on seed mixes need vitamins most in winter, when fresh greens are scarce.
Who it suits
Dogs, puppies, cats, rodents and pet birds with vitamin A, D and E deficiency, rickets, osteodystrophy, fractures or during recovery — strictly by the dose table. For calcium in puppies, see Canina Welpenkalk. Other supplements are in vitamins and mineral supplements.
Verdict
Prodevit is a simple, inexpensive oil-based drop with vitamins A, D3 and E for many kinds of pets. It works well for a real deficiency but needs precise drop dosing and a short course, because too much of a fat-soluble vitamin is worse than too little.
