To get rid of cat urine smell, blot a fresh puddle with paper towels (don't rub), then generously treat the area with an enzyme odour neutraliser so it soaks as deep as the urine did, leave it to work as directed and let it dry without heat. Don't use bleach or ammonia — their smell is similar to urine and draws the cat back to the same spot. Ordinary cleaners and air fresheners only mask the smell: uric acid crystals stay behind and come back to life when it's humid.
Why cat urine smell is so persistent
Cat urine is very concentrated. It contains urea, which breaks down over time and releases ammonia, and uric acid, which forms crystals that don't dissolve in water. Soap and water wash away urea, but the crystals stay in fabric, foam and laminate joints — and every time humidity rises, the smell returns. They can be broken down by the enzymes and bacteria in special neutralisers.
What removes the smell: which products work
| Product | Does it work? | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Enzyme neutralisers for pets | Yes | Break down urine components instead of masking them |
| Vinegar, baking soda | Partly | Reduce the smell of a fresh stain but don't destroy the crystals |
| Hydrogen peroxide | Partly | May bleach fabric; test on a hidden area first |
| Bleach, ammonia | No | Smell like urine to a cat and trigger repeat accidents |
| Air fresheners and perfume | No | Only mask it for a while |
For accident spots, try the AnimAll pet odour eliminator, which breaks down odour molecules from marking and waste, or AnimAll Cleane Home Hypo for regular cleaning of the litter box and surfaces. For furniture and vertical surfaces, the bio-enzyme foam Nature's Miracle is handy because it doesn't run. All products are in the stain and odour removers section.
Step-by-step guide
- Blot fresh urine with paper towels, pressing down. Don't rub — the stain will spread.
- Find every stain. Old marks show up well in the dark under a UV torch.
- Apply the neutraliser generously: urine soaks in deep and the product must reach the same depth. On a carpet or sofa, treat a slightly larger area than the stain.
- Give it time. Enzymes need from a few hours to a day. You can cover the area with film so the product doesn't dry too fast.
- Dry naturally, without a hair dryer or iron: heat bakes the urine proteins in.
- Repeat if the smell remains — that's normal for old stains.
Different surfaces
- Sofa and mattress. Urine goes into the foam, so you need plenty of product. Treat both sides of a mattress if the stain soaked through. Wash removable covers with an enzyme product at 30–40 °C.
- Carpet. Check whether urine reached the underlay and the floor beneath — treat them too.
- Laminate and parquet. The joints are the problem: urine seeps into them. Treat the joints and the skirting board if needed. Badly soaked boards sometimes have to be replaced.
- Tiles. The easiest surface, but treat the grout too — it's porous.
- Shoes and clothes. Soak in an enzyme solution, then wash. Dry shoes at room temperature.
Smell from the litter box
If it's the litter box that smells rather than an accident, regular cleaning helps: scoop clumps once or twice a day, replace all the litter as directed and wash the box without bleach. You can add odour-absorbing granules to the box, such as Beaphar Odour Killer, which breaks down the source of the smell with friendly bacteria. Highly absorbent litters are in the cat litter section.
The key is to remove the cause
If your cat keeps choosing the same spot, removing the smell isn't enough. Find out why the cat isn't using the box: it could be illness, stress, an uncomfortable toilet or marking. All causes are covered in which litter box to choose and our other articles on cat behaviour.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I remove an old cat urine stain?
With an enzyme neutraliser in 2–3 rounds: apply generously, leave for a few hours under film, let dry and repeat.
Does vinegar remove cat urine smell?
It partly helps with a fresh stain, but it doesn't destroy uric acid crystals, so the smell can come back.
Why did the smell come back after cleaning?
The product didn't reach the depth the urine soaked to, or an ordinary cleaner was used. Treat again with an enzyme neutraliser.
Can I use bleach?
No: bleach and ammonia smell like urine to a cat and encourage it to mark the spot again.
