It contains coal tar (2%), salicylic acid (2%) and micronised sulphur (1%), plus colloidal oatmeal and allantoin to moisturise the skin and speed healing. According to the manufacturer, it relieves flaking caused by seborrhoea, helps with mange and other parasitic infections, and is effective against fungal and bacterial skin infections. It's paraben-free, pH-balanced, doesn't strip the protective oil layer and doesn't reduce the effectiveness of previously applied flea and tick treatments. Important: it's only for dogs over 12 weeks old and must not be used on cats.
What seborrhoea is
Seborrhoeic dermatitis is a skin disorder in which the skin flakes or, conversely, becomes too oily. Causes, according to the manufacturer, include impaired epidermal function, genetic predisposition, and fungal and bacterial infections. Symptoms include skin inflammation, dandruff-like scales, lots of skin flakes on bedding, peeling patches especially on the back, itching, greasy skin, hair loss, ear infections and thick crusts. As causes vary, it's best to have your vet make the diagnosis and treatment plan.

How the ingredients work
According to the manufacturer, coal tar removes dead cells from the upper skin layer to make way for new ones and relieves itching and flaking. Salicylic acid is antiseptic and keratolytic: it softens and lifts scales and reduces inflammation. Sulphur has antiparasitic and antimicrobial effects and, the manufacturer says, doesn't lead to tolerance. Colloidal oatmeal and allantoin moisturise and soften dry, rough skin and reduce irritation.
How to wash
The site doesn't give a contact time, so follow the instructions on the bottle. The general principle for medicated shampoos: wet the coat well, apply to the affected areas and the whole body, work into a lather, leave for the stated time so the actives can work, then rinse thoroughly. Avoid the eyes.
Why not for cats
The manufacturer stresses twice that the shampoo is for dogs only and must not be used on cats. Cats are especially sensitive to certain substances, including tar components and salicylates, and swallow products when grooming. For a cat with seborrhoea, use a shampoo approved for cats, such as Douxo S3 SEB.
Flea drops and bathing
The manufacturer states that the shampoo doesn't reduce the effectiveness of previously applied flea and tick treatments. Even so, always check the drops' instructions: some require not bathing the animal for several days after application.
Alternatives
For dandruff with greasy skin, consider the sulphur shampoo Iv San Bernard Mineral Plus Zolfo. If your vet suspects mites, separate treatments may be needed — such as Novertin ointment. More products are in the antiparasitic shampoos and sprays section.
Storage
Keep the bottle closed at room temperature, away from children and pets. Don't use it after the expiry date.
Who it suits
Owners of dogs over 12 weeks old with seborrhoea — flaking, dandruff, greasy skin and itching — when a vet has recommended a medicated shampoo with tar, sulphur and salicylic acid. The small bottle is handy for checking tolerance. All shampoos are in the shampoos and conditioners section.
Verdict
Veterinary Formula Antiparasitic & Antiseborrheic is a medicated dog shampoo with 2% coal tar, 2% salicylic acid and 1% sulphur, plus oatmeal and allantoin: according to the manufacturer, it relieves seborrhoeic flaking and helps with parasitic, fungal and bacterial skin problems. The downsides are that it must not be used on cats, the bottle is only 45 ml, and the contact time isn't given on the site.
