Novertin Ointment, 30 g is a topical antiparasitic ointment from the Ukrainian maker UZVPP. The active ingredient is aversectin C (0.05 g per 100 g), produced by microbial synthesis using Streptomyces avermitilis. It's used to treat dogs, cats, fur animals and rabbits for otodectic mange (ear mites), psoroptic, notoedric and sarcoptic mange, demodicosis, and infestations with biting lice, sucking lice and fleas. It has the consistency of thick sour cream and ranges from white to light grey.
How aversectin works
Aversectin C increases production of gamma-aminobutyric acid in the parasite, blocking nerve impulses and causing paralysis and death of mites and insects. According to the manufacturer, it has low toxicity to mammals. The ointment works locally where applied, which makes it especially handy for localised lesions: in the ears, on the face or on the paws.

Treatment schedule
For otodectic, psoroptic, notoedric and sarcoptic mange, apply the ointment to affected areas at 0.2 g per cm² and repeat after 5–7 days, and again if needed. For demodicosis, repeat five times at 7–10-day intervals. Against fleas, sucking and biting lice, rub the ointment in against the coat in places the animal can't lick, twice at 7–10-day intervals. Before treating ear mites, clean crusts and discharge from the ears — see how to clean your pet's ears and eyes.
Pros
- Broad spectrum. Mites, fleas and lice.
- Local action. Handy for localised lesions.
- For dogs, cats and rabbits. One product for different animals.
- A clear schedule. Specific to each condition.
- Very affordable. A Ukrainian product.
- A handy tube. Easy to dose.
Cons
- A diagnosis is needed. Demodicosis and mange are confirmed by a vet's skin scraping.
- A long course for demodicosis. Five treatments.
- Must not be licked. Apply where the animal can't reach.
- Not a preventive. It treats rather than protects long-term.
How to recognise ear mites
Ear mites show up as dark brown, dry discharge resembling coffee grounds, intense itching, head shaking and scratch marks behind the ears. Kittens and puppies are infected especially often, and mites spread easily between animals at home, so all cats and dogs living together are treated. Bacterial and fungal ear infections can look similar and need other products, such as Surolan, plus a vet's examination.
For rabbits
The ointment is approved for rabbits — for ear mange (psoroptic mange) and notoedric mange, both common in pet rabbits. The manufacturer notes that rabbits may be slaughtered for meat 5 days after the last treatment. On pet rabbit care, see pet rabbits: care and feeding.
Safety
Don't use the ointment on weakened, emaciated or sick animals. Wear gloves and wash your hands afterwards. Make sure the animal doesn't lick it off and other pets don't groom the treated areas. If drooling, vomiting or trembling appear after application, wash the ointment off and see a vet.
Who it suits
Owners of dogs, cats and rabbits with confirmed ear mites, mange or demodicosis, and for local treatment of fleas and lice. For long-term flea protection, spot-ons are better — more in fleas in cats: how to get rid of them. More products are in the parasite control section.
Verdict
Novertin Ointment is an affordable aversectin ointment for local treatment of ear and mange mites, demodicosis, fleas and lice in dogs, cats and rabbits, with a clear treatment schedule. The downsides are the need for an accurate diagnosis, a long course for demodicosis, and no lasting protection against reinfestation.
