ProVET ProfiLine, 35 cm is a flea and tick collar for cats and small dogs from the Ukrainian maker ProVET. It's a PVC band with a buckle, impregnated with the insecticide-acaricide propoxur at 0.85 g per 10 g of collar. It protects against fleas, biting lice, sucking lice and ixodid ticks. According to the manufacturer, continuous wear gives up to 5 months of flea protection and up to 10 weeks against ticks. It's suitable from 3 months of age.
How the collar works
The active ingredient is gradually released from the band and spreads over the skin and coat, killing parasites on contact. Propoxur acts on fleas, lice and ticks at adult and larval stages. Protection doesn't start immediately, as the substance needs time to spread, so it's best to fit the collar before tick season begins. How to fit it
Open the pack just before use. Fit the collar so two fingers fit between it and the neck: it should move freely but not slip over the head. Trim the excess, leaving extra length if the animal is still growing. Wash pets with dirty, matted coats with shampoo beforehand. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling the collar, and don't smoke, eat or drink while fitting it.
Safety
Don't use the collar on kittens or puppies under 12 weeks, sick or weakened animals, pregnant or nursing females, or animals with skin disease or damaged skin. If redness appears on the neck or your pet is distressed, remove the collar. Don't let small children play with an animal wearing the collar or put it in their mouths. Introduce cats to the collar under supervision, as some try to paw it off.
Collars and other products
Don't combine the collar with other insecticides without a vet's advice, as this can lead to overdose. If you need more reliable all-season tick protection, consider spot-ons or tablets. ProVET also makes spot-on drops for dogs: ProVET ProfiLine drops. More on protection in fleas in cats: how to get rid of them and protecting dogs from fleas and ticks.
Storage
Keep the collar in its sealed pack in a dry place, away from food and pet food, at 0–30 °C and out of reach of children and pets. Once opened, the collar works for 5 months.
Who it suits
Owners of cats and small dogs over 3 months who want inexpensive, long-lasting flea protection and seasonal tick protection. More products are in the parasite control section and the flea and tick collar collection.
Verdict
The ProVET ProfiLine 35 cm is an affordable propoxur collar for cats and small dogs, protecting against fleas for up to 5 months and ticks for up to 10 weeks. A simple seasonal solution. The downsides are shorter tick protection than flea protection, a distinctive smell, and it's not for pregnant, nursing or sick animals.
