How to use it
For flat-faced (brachycephalic) pets such as pugs, French bulldogs, Pekingese, Shih Tzus, Persians and British Shorthairs, spray the lotion around the eyes with 2–3 pumps. For other dogs and cats, use a gauze pad moistened with the lotion, wiping from the outer corner of the eye to the inner and removing discharge, then repeat with a second clean pad. Use a separate pad for each eye. To fade tear stains, treat the fur around the eyes daily. More in how to clean your pet's ears and eyes.
Where tear stains come from
Reddish-brown streaks under the eyes appear when tears constantly run onto the fur and oxidise. Causes vary: face and tear duct structure, eye irritation from hair, allergies and sometimes diet. Regular cleaning reduces staining, but with heavy tearing it's worth seeing a vet to rule out a blocked tear duct or eyelid problems.
When to see a vet
See a vet if the discharge is yellow or green, the eye is red or swollen, or your pet squints, paws at the eye or avoids light. These are signs of conjunctivitis, injury or infection and need an examination and medicated drops. In such cases the lotion is only suitable for gentle cleaning before applying medication. Vets may prescribe drops such as Cipronorm.
Daily eye care
The best time to wipe the eyes is in the morning after sleep, when discharge collects in the corners. Do it calmly and praise your pet — over time it becomes routine. Carefully trim or tie back long hair around the eyes so it doesn't touch the cornea. Use only clean, lint-free pads and don't rub the eye with pressure. If your pet has light fur, blot it with a dry tissue afterwards so it doesn't stay damp.
Storage
Keep the bottle closed, away from sunlight and heaters, out of children's reach. Don't touch the eyes with the nozzle.
Who it suits
Owners of flat-faced dogs and cats and pets with light fur and tear stains who need regular gentle eye care. More products are in the eye, ear and skin care section.
Verdict
Priroda Sani Pet is a herbal eye-hygiene spray-lotion for dogs and cats with extracts of 20 plants, handy for daily care and tackling tear stains. The spray format is especially convenient for flat-faced pets. The downsides are that it doesn't treat infections and the herbs may cause individual reactions.
