Cipronorm BioTestLab, 10 ml is a combined eye and ear drop from the Ukrainian maker BioTestLab for dogs and cats. Each ml contains ciprofloxacin (5 mg) and dexamethasone (1 mg). Ciprofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic, and dexamethasone is a corticosteroid that reduces inflammation, swelling and allergic reactions. The drops are used for infectious and inflammatory eye and ear conditions caused by ciprofloxacin-sensitive bacteria.
What it is and how it works
Ciprofloxacin stops bacteria from multiplying by blocking the DNA gyrase enzyme, and works against many gram-positive and gram-negative organisms, including Pseudomonas and staphylococci. In the eye it penetrates the cornea and conjunctiva well. Dexamethasone quickly reduces redness, swelling and discharge. Little of the drug reaches the bloodstream with topical use.
Indications
- infectious and inflammatory eye and ear conditions caused by sensitive bacteria;
- allergic conditions of the front of the eye complicated by bacterial infection;
- preventing and treating eye and ear inflammation after surgery.
Dosage
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Dose | 1–2 drops into the conjunctival sac or ear canal |
| Frequency | 2–3 times a day |
| Course | usually 5–7 days, up to 2 weeks if needed |
| Per ml | ciprofloxacin 5 mg, dexamethasone 1 mg |
Pros
- Two actions at once. An antibiotic against bacteria and a steroid against inflammation.
- For eyes and ears. One bottle for both.
- Broad spectrum. Also works against Pseudomonas.
- Short course. Usually 5–7 days.
- Handy dropper bottle. No separate pipette needed.
Cons and what to keep in mind
- Vet prescription only. It's an antibiotic with a steroid.
- Steroid and eye injuries. With a scratch or corneal ulcer, dexamethasone drops are risky without an exam.
- Not for viruses or fungi. The antibiotic doesn't act on them.
- Caution in pregnancy. As stated in the instructions.
How to apply
The drops should be at room temperature; shake the bottle first. If there's a lot of pus, crusts or discharge, clean first: instil 3–4 drops and wipe the discharge away with gauze (sterile for the eyes), then apply the treatment dose. For the eye, drop into the lower lid while gently pulling it down rather than onto the cornea. For the ear, drop into the canal and massage the base of the ear. Don't touch the eye or fur with the tip. More on the procedure in how to clean your dog's and cat's ears and eyes.
When to get a check before using the drops
If the eye is squinting, the pet paws at it, or the cornea looks cloudy or has a spot, it may be an injury or corneal ulcer. Steroid drops can slow healing and make it worse, so the cornea should first be examined with a stain. Ears are similar: with severe pain, a head tilt or a suspected ruptured eardrum, have a vet look first. If there's no improvement after 3–4 days, discuss the course with your vet.
How it differs from ear drops
Dedicated ear products such as Surolan often also contain an antifungal, which matters with yeast otitis. Cipronorm doesn't treat fungi but works for eyes too. For routine ear cleaning, use a cleaner such as Aurikap.
Who it suits
Dogs and cats with bacterial conjunctivitis, keratoconjunctivitis and otitis externa, and after eye or ear surgery — as prescribed by a vet. Other medicines are in the veterinary pharmacy.
Verdict
Cipronorm combines ciprofloxacin and dexamethasone to treat bacterial eye and ear inflammation in dogs and cats. It works quickly and is easy to use, but because it contains a steroid and an antibiotic, a vet should prescribe it — especially for the eyes.
