Brit GF Veterinary Diet Hypoallergenic Cat, 2 kg is a grain-free dietetic food from the Czech brand Brit for cats with food allergy and intolerance, allergic otitis, atopic dermatitis, chronic diarrhoea and bowel disease. The only animal protein is salmon: dehydrated (30%) and hydrolysed salmon protein (20%) with molecules under 5,000 daltons, which the immune system barely recognises as an allergen. Carbohydrates come from yellow peas and buckwheat. It has 1% omega-3 with EPA and DHA, plus biotin, zinc and vitamin C for the skin. Energy: 390 kcal per 100 g.

How to run the diet
Consult a vet before starting and before extending the diet. To identify food allergy, the food is fed for 3–8 weeks as the only food: no treats, wet food, table scraps or flavoured supplements. If allergy is confirmed, the diet can be fed long-term. Feed it dry or softened with warm water, and switch gradually over 5–7 days.
Pros
- One protein — salmon. Makes it easier to exclude allergens.
- Hydrolysate. Protein broken into small molecules that rarely trigger a reaction.
- Omega-3 with EPA and DHA. Supports the skin and reduces inflammation.
- For skin and coat. Biotin, zinc and vitamin C.
- For the gut. Prebiotics and a probiotic help with chronic diarrhoea.
Cons and what to keep in mind
- A therapeutic diet. Prescribed by a vet, not fed as regular food.
- Not for fish allergy. If a cat reacts to salmon, a diet with another protein is needed.
- Strict. One chicken titbit can spoil weeks of results.
- Peas. Together with pea protein, legumes make up a notable share.
- Fussiness. Some cats are reluctant to switch to a new taste.
How food allergy shows in cats
Most often as itching and scratches on the head, neck and around the ears, hair loss on the belly from constant licking, recurring ear infections, and vomiting or soft stools. Fleas cause similar signs, so they're ruled out first by treating every animal in the home. More in how to get rid of fleas on a cat. Blood allergy tests in cats are of little value — food allergy can only be confirmed by diet.
Helping your cat accept the new food
Mix the therapeutic food with the old one, gradually increasing the share of the new. Slightly warmed, softened food smells stronger and appeals more to cats. Don't leave food out all day — it goes stale. If your cat doesn't eat for more than a day, see a vet: prolonged fasting is dangerous for cats. More in how to switch your pet to a new food. What a cat should never eat — see foods cats must not eat.
Who it suits
Adult cats with suspected or confirmed food allergy, atopic dermatitis, allergic otitis, chronic diarrhoea and inflammatory bowel disease — as prescribed by a vet. Other foods are in dry cat food.
Verdict
Brit Veterinary Diet Hypoallergenic Cat is a strong therapeutic diet with single-protein salmon and hydrolysate, plenty of omega-3 and support for the skin and gut. It's suitable for diagnosing and managing food allergy long-term, but only works when followed strictly under a vet's supervision.
