Brit Fresh Chicken & Potato, 12 kg is a dry food for adult dogs of all breeds made with fresh chicken and potato. The first two ingredients are fresh chicken (40%) and dried chicken (20%), and the third is potato (10%). The recipe also includes chicken fat preserved with mixed tocopherols, oats, buckwheat (4%), apples (3%), beetroot, salmon oil, brewer's yeast, flaxseed, chicken liver and collagen. The food contains the probiotic Enterococcus faecium, glucosamine (1700 mg/kg) and chondroitin sulphate (1300 mg/kg). Its energy value is 3810 kcal/kg.
Ingredients in detail
Besides the main components, the recipe includes seaweed, blackcurrant, parsley, rosemary, thyme (0.05%), marigold and dandelion. The functional additives are given in milligrams per kilogram: fructo-oligosaccharides 220, beta-glucans 200, mannan-oligosaccharides 180, yucca 150 and green-lipped mussel 100. The probiotic Enterococcus faecium is declared at 1×10⁹ CFU. There is little grain in the food — oats and buckwheat — but it is not grain-free.

Pros
- 60% chicken. Fresh and dried chicken at the top of the list.
- Meaningful joint doses. 1700 mg glucosamine and 1300 mg chondroitin per kilogram.
- Probiotic and prebiotics. Enterococcus faecium, FOS, MOS and beta-glucans.
- Natural preservative. Mixed tocopherols.
- Herbs and collagen. For skin, coat and ligaments.
- Good-value bag. 12 kg lasts a large dog a long time.
Cons and what to watch
- Chicken only. Not suitable for dogs allergic to chicken.
- No analysis. Protein, fat and fibre are not listed in the card.
- Fresh meat loses water. After drying, the 40% fresh chicken weighs much less, so the real meat share in the finished food is lower than it looks.
- Big bag. A small dog will not finish 12 kg while the food is still fresh.
What "fresh chicken" means
Fresh meat is added raw and is about two thirds water. During production the moisture evaporates, so 40% fresh chicken becomes a much smaller share of the finished kibble. Dried chicken (20%), on the other hand, is already a protein concentrate. It is good that Brit Fresh uses both: fresh meat improves taste, while dried meat supplies the main protein. Joints and digestion
Glucosamine and chondroitin at 1700 and 1300 mg/kg are among the most noticeable doses in the regular dry foods we have reviewed. For a large dog with a good appetite this is real daily cartilage support, backed up by collagen and mussel. The probiotic and prebiotics help the gut, and yucca in pet foods usually reduces stool odour. If the joints already hurt, the food will not replace treatment — discuss a joint supplement with your vet.
Potato, oats and buckwheat
Potato is the main carbohydrate source, while oats and buckwheat provide fibre and energy. There is not much cereal, and most dogs tolerate these grains well. The food is not grain-free, but it is not built on wheat or corn either. If your vet has advised cutting out grains completely, choose a different formula.
How to store a 12 kg bag
A big bag is good value, but once opened the food starts to oxidise. Close the bag tightly with a clip or move part of the food into a container, keeping the rest closed in a cool, dry place. Work out how many weeks your dog will take to finish the bag: if it is longer than six to eight weeks, a smaller bag is better. Details are in how to store dry food.
How much to feed
The amount is on the pack and depends on your dog's weight and activity. At 3810 kcal/kg the energy level is moderate, suitable for dogs with normal activity. Measure the portion with scales and subtract treats from the daily allowance. The calculation is explained in how much food to give a dog per day.
Switching to the food
Switch your dog over 7–10 days, gradually increasing the share of the new food. Because of the probiotic and fibre, the stool may change a little in the first days — that is fine as long as it stays formed. A step-by-step plan is in how to switch your pet to a new food.
Who it suits
The food suits adult dogs of any breed without a chicken allergy, especially large dogs and multi-pet households. For active dogs Brit Fresh offers a duck and millet formula. Other options are in our holistic dog food and large breed dog food collections and in the dry dog food section.
Verdict
Brit Fresh Chicken & Potato is a dry food for adult dogs with 40% fresh and 20% dried chicken, potato, a probiotic and high doses of glucosamine and chondroitin, at 3810 kcal/kg. The downsides are the single chicken protein, which rules it out for allergic dogs, the missing analysis in the card and a 12 kg bag that is impractical for small dogs.
