Why rodents need hay
For rabbits, guinea pigs and chinchillas hay is the basis of the diet: fibre keeps digestion working and chewing wears down their ever-growing teeth. Fresh hay should always be available in the cage.
Meadow hay suits daily feeding; alfalfa is richer in protein and calcium — give it to young, pregnant and nursing animals and only a little to adults. Good hay is green, dry and smells of grass, without mould or dust.
